The world with 100 people?
If you’ve ever wondered how the world would look if only 100 people were alive, this article will capture your attention.
Let’s begin with the least alarming numbers. The population would be evenly divided: 50 women and 50 men. Among them, 74 would be adults and the remaining 26 would be children.
When it comes to religion, 33 would be Christians, 22 Muslims, 14 Hindus, 7 Buddhists, 12 would follow other faiths, and the remaining 12 would identify as atheists.
As for language, 12 would speak Mandarin, 6 Spanish, 5 English, 4 Hindi, 3 Arabic, 3 Portuguese, 3 Bengali, 2 Russian, 2 Japanese, and the remaining 60 would speak local languages or dialects.
Now come the most striking — and alarming — facts. Out of the 100 people, 86 would be able to read and write, while 14 would be illiterate. Only 7 would hold a university degree.
Fifteen people would live on less than $2 a day. One person would control half of the world’s wealth, while the remaining 99 would share the other half.
Seventy-seven people would have a place to live, but 23 would be homeless. Eighty-seven would have access to clean water, while 13 would struggle to obtain it. Sixteen people would live without a toilet, and 78 would have access to electricity.
Perhaps the most heartbreaking statistic of all: of the 26 children in this imagined world, half would suffer from hunger.
Thirteen out of 26 children facing hunger is not just a number — it’s a reflection of a world that desperately needs change.
Can you imagine the huge amount of suffering that these little kids go through day by day? It is totally heartbreaking and unacceptable. We, future change makers, must take care of the world, no matter how little our impact is, but we need to move. On the other side, we should be thankful, each day, for every tiny thing we have, like food, house, potable water, and just for being alive. Despite our busy lives, I recommend taking some time to think about our current life and reflect on it. Did we have a great infancy? Surrounded by love and heat? If so, let’s use that lovely experiences and memories as a “fuel” to make other’s life better. I had an awesome childhood, I was always loved and supported by everyone, because of this, I have now an objetive of making other’s childrens’ childhood as special as mine. If you are reading this, take this as a sign to start reconsidering how you add value to the world, and how you can do it better.
